Preparing your index

Decide how many indexes you need

• Most books need only one integrated index.
• Very long or particularly technical books may require separate subject/name indexes. If you think your book requires more than one index, please contact your desk editor to discuss.

Create your index(es)

• Download indexing guidance and sample index pages (.docx)
• Generating your index using AI would involve uploading your full unpublished manuscript, which can jeopardise author copyright over your work. As such, we do not allow the use of AI to assist in generating your index. For more information, see our full AI Policy.
