Downloading ebooks
To make the ebook reading experience more enjoyable across platforms, ebooks purchased on the EUP website are accessed either through direct download (PDFs) or through the Academic Reader app and browser reader (powered by Glassboxx). The formats are listed on the price buttons for books with either "Ebook (PDF)" or "Ebook (app)".
If pre-ordered, ebooks will appear in the My Ebooks section of your account (Ebook (PDF)) or your Edinburgh University Press app or browser reader (Ebook (app)) upon publication.
Downloading PDFs
After making your purchase, go to your account dashboard and click on "My Ebooks". Your PDF will be ready to download using the "Download PDF" button.
Downloading app purchases (EPUB)
After making your purchase, you simply install the Academic Reader app on your smartphone, tablet or computer, or go to the Academic Reader browser reader, and log in with the email address used for your purchase. Your ebooks will be ready and waiting for you.

Use the Academic Reader app to read your books on iOS, Android, Windows and macOS devices. Just click the relevant download links here and install the app.

Historical Purchases
For ebooks purchased between 4th July 2023 and 28th May 2025
Ebooks purchased during this period are readable exclusively via the Academic Reader app or browser reader, regardless of format. After making your purchase, you simply install the Academic Reader App on your smartphone, tablet or computer, or go to our browser reader, and log in with the email address used for your purchase. Your ebooks will be ready and waiting for you.
For ebooks purchased prior to 4th July 2023
You can access your ebooks at any time, either through the link in your order confirmation email, or by going to ‘My ebooks’ within your Account Dashboard. When you open your ebook, be sure to save a copy to your reader, tablet or PC.

Our open access ebooks are free to download
To download open access books, either add them to your basket and checkout as normal, or download them directly from the Open Access tab on the book page.
If you download an OA book via the basket option, you will also be able to access it at any time by going to ‘My ebooks’ within your Account Dashboard.
