More on the Book

This remarkable account of the life and work of William Gillies provides new evidence to show that his art originates in his personal traumas and awareness of human fragility in a century of world wars, change and uncertainty.

Uncovering paintings not seen before, the book reveals new meanings among his portraits, still lifes and landscapes. By exploring issues of sexuality, religion and mental health, it places Gillies within the broader contexts of the painting and cultural politics of Scotland, Britain and Europe. This is William Gillies as you’ve never experienced him before.
