We are delighted to announce that Molla Nasreddin: The Making of a Modern Trickster, 1906-1911 by Janet and Kamran Afary has won the British-Kuwait Friendship Society book prize for 2023. Congratulations!
From the anonymous review panel:
‘This book is an excellent study of its under-studied subject, with special reference to the above-mentioned journal of that name. It has been well-researched, well-written and well-presented and deserves a round of applause from the committee.’
This annual prize highlights the best scholarly work in English on the Middle East, published in the UK. The book explores the iconic illustrated periodical Mollā Nasreddin, whose editors, writers and illustrators were Azerbaijani Muslims and Georgians of South Caucasus.
