Emotion, Mission, Architecture receives Honourable Mention for IJIA Book Award

Sara Honarmand Ebrahimi's innovative history of medical mission was praised by the committee for its 'meticulous research'.

We're delighted to share that Sara Honarmand Ebrahimi's Emotion, Mission, Architecture: Building Hospitals in Persia and British India, 1865-1914 has been awarded an Honourable Mention in the 2025 Book Award from the International Journal of Islamic Architecture.

What the judges said:

The selection committee was unanimous in its admiration for Honarmand Ebrahimi's work, noting that it takes ‘the reader to previously unexamined geographies to demonstrate how modern hospitals served as mediators of cultural encounters between British missionaries and local populations in various towns across Iran and colonial India. Honarmand Ebrahimi’s meticulous research with thoughtfully selected illustrations provides a remarkable model for engaging with and reasoning through space at multiple scales, from expansive rural geographies to the specifics of a hospital floor plate’.

About the book:

Emotion, Mission, Architecture is an innovative history of medical mission from the perspective of the history of emotions. A synthesis of Christian mission history, architectural history, emotions history and history of medicine and empire, the book raises broader historical questions about the process of mobilising and regulating emotions in the Christian missionary contexts – contributing in turn to discussions on hybridity, missionary and local encounters, women’s agency and the interactions between mission and empire.
