BAFTSS Awards 2024 Results

See the EUP authors and editors who took home an award

We are delighted to share the news that three of our Film Studies books, plus two journal articles, took home a prize at the 2024 BAFTSS Awards.

Congratulations to all of our authors and editors who received a prize, as well as those who had been shortlisted.

Best Monograph

Runner-Up:

Gooey Media: Screen Entertainment and the Graphic User Interface by Nick Jones

What the judges had to say:

"A really interesting and engaging monograph that connects one interface to our network beyond. This thinking around the question through a wide range of forms and examples also asks us to consider our relationship and interactions with the screen. This is beautifully written, in language that is easy to follow yet intellectually stimulating. Impressive in every way."

Best First Monograph

Runner-Up:

Ageing, Dementia and Time in Film: Temporal Performace by MaoHui Deng

What the judges had to say:

"This book manages to balance complexity with accessibility and raises profound questions about the cinema and the illness in its focus equally. A hugely accomplished book, both in terms of its intellectual rigour and its readability, with an openness to those less knowledgeable about dementia. The establishment of the experience of time in film is explored with clarity of mind and structured in such a way as to be inclusive of all readers (from any discipline) and of all ways of thinking about memory, time and age.  It is a book which has wider implications for a thinking about time and cinema."

Honourable Mention:

Iconoclasm in European Cinema: The Ethics and Aesthetics of Image Destruction by Chiara Quaranta

What the judges had to say:

"A beautifully written ‘love letter’ as Quaranta states: this book carefully handles the conceptual and practical and dismantles the relationships we take for granted with the visual. The conceptual framing is ambitious and thought-provoking, making this a fascinating read that points beyond its concerns with iconoclasm towards wider questions of film philosophy."

Best Published Essay By a Doctoral Student

Runner-Up:

The Matter of Manual Traces: Letters, Photographs and Bean Paste in Naomi Kawase’s  Cinema of Touch by Lydia Tuan, Film-Philosophy, Volume 26 Issue 3

What the judges had to say:

"A beautifully written, detailed and lucid analysis of the representation of the hand in Naomi’s Kwase’s films Sweet Bean (2015), Radiance (2017), True Mothers (2020). An insightful reading of the haptic and material traces of touch as presence and absence in a medium associated with the preservation of time. Engaging throughout the essay negotiates the intricacies of the relationship between image, medium and narrative. A skilful and exciting piece of work."

Honourable Mention:

Liquidity and Stillness: The Sea and Shore and the Furo in Kore-eda Hirokazu’s Cinema by Yue Su, Somatechnics, Volume 13 Issue 2

What the judges had to say:

"A fascinating essay with a clear theoretical framework orientated around a discussion of the metaphorics of water and kinship in Kore-eda Hirokazu’s cinema. Carefully researched, the article formulates a detailed analysis of the way that water offers a lens to reconsider meanings and forms of kinship in Still Walking (2008) and Like Father/Like Son (2013), Maborosi (1995), and Our Little Sister (2015).  An insightful analysis of Hirokazu’s cinema."
