About this book

Why do our experiences of the beauty of nature matter so much to us?

  • Looks at the beauty of nature as important in itself, beyond its role in supporting arguments for environmental policies and conservation strategies
  • Defends the idea of beauty from its dismissive critics, arguing for a deeper meaning of beauty and the special significance of natural beauty
  • Explores the many ways that people find their experiences of natural beauty to be meaningful

What is it about a mountain landscape, an ancient woodland or the changing light on the sea that can move us so deeply? David E. Cooper believes that our experience of natural beauty is far more than a matter of personal taste and passing pleasure: it is a vital part of living a good life.

Drawing on philosophy, poetry and nature writing from all over the world, Cooper develops a rich account of both beauty and nature, showing how our experiences of nature can be meaningful in many ways. He challenges us to rethink our relationship with nature and to see it as an essential component of a life well lived.
