About this book

Navigates and locates some of Peirce’s most abstract concepts using diagrams

  • Sets out a fresh ‘diagrammatic’ approach to doing and navigating philosophy
  • Offers a novel and ambitious reconstruction of Peirce’s metaphysics and perception
  • Provides chapters covering some of the most abstract concepts in Peirce’s philosophy including chaos, existence, percepts and the formation of signs
  • Shows how different areas of Peirce’s philosophy are connected and how one moves within and across these strata, planes and realms
  • Provides the foundations for connecting Peirce to other philosophical projects, particularly the work of the continental philosophers Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari

Charles Sanders Peirce is one of the most influential American philosophers to date. Numerous attempts have been made to map out and connect key areas of his complex philosophical project. Whilst Peirce advocated the important role played by diagrammatics, as yet there are no dedicated attempts to ‘draw out’ these connections.

Gareth Abrahams uses his skills as an architect to develop a sequence of diagrams that navigate two of the most abstract and poorly understood areas of Peirce’s project: his proposals for a phenomenon outside of the mind and the perception of the phenomenon within the mind (the phaneron). In doing so, he offers a fresh approach to Peircean scholarship, and to the way we think about and navigate philosophy more broadly.

About the author

Gareth Abrahams

Gareth Abrahams is a leading scholar in the relationship between philosophy and spatial theory. His unique approach draws together a detailed and intricate reading of philosophical texts with over 10-years’ industry experience working as a practising architect. He has published extensively in the field of philosophy and its relation to architecture, art, and planning. This includes a monograph with Routledge and articles in Deleuze and Guattari Studies. By using a range of diagrams and detailed design drawings to help navigate and engage with these links, his work provides fresh insight into some of the most abstract concepts in Continental and American philosophy. Gareth gained his PhD from the University of Cardiff and currently works as an Associate Professor at the University of Liverpool.
